We adopted Pünchki (pronounced “Poonch-key”) on February 9, 2007 from the Idaho Humane Society. ("Pünchki" is Polish for jelly filled doughnut. "Pünchki" is NOT the correct Polish spelling. We wanted to spell it more phonetically otherwise I would have forgotten how to say her name! And she really does look like a little doughnut! Click HERE to find out about the REAL Pünchkis! ) Jim said she was my Valentine's Day gift. It was not planned or anything, we just decided it definetly was time for another kitty finally after loosing our beloved Taffy in October 2005 to cancer. So we went to the shelter on our lunch and there were probably about 25-30 cats there. Most were sleeping. We saw one cat I really liked and brought her out of her cage and held her. She was a beautiful dark striped tabby. She didn't seem all that impressed or interested in us though. So I said to Jim "Let's come back after work and see if she reacts different to us" Jim agreed and we started to head out. We passed Pünchki's cage (who had previously been sleeping) and she woke up and walked toward the front of the cage. We saw how absolutely beautiful she was! So Jim opened her cage door, she out stretched her 2 little arms and placed them on Jim's chest and crawled up into his arms. We instantly fell in love with her. She nuzzled and purred up a storm. Our hearts melted and knew she was the one! We had to put her back in the cage because they needed to check still if she was spayed. If not they would have to spay her and we could not pick her up then until the next afternoon. She did NOT want us to leave her back in that cage! She had chosen US and did not want us to go. We filled out the adoption papers right then and there. She had been at the shelter since January 31st after being found as a stray in Payette, Idaho. Payette is about 60 miles from Boise where we live and only about 8 miles from the Oregon border. She was estimated at 2 years old.
We picked her up the next afternoon (she did NOT have to be spayed, she was already). She was in her own kitty stocked room at our home then for several days until she adjusted to her new environment (which she did extremely quickly!) and until we could have our own vet check her out. After the vet visit she was allowed to wander around the house and 'met' the other kitties. I was impressed, not one single hiss from anyone, but they certainly were wide eyed!
Pünchki and Simba became quick friends, they even layed together on my chest! NONE of my cats have EVER done that with each other! Bella was afraid of Pünchki! She would run away from her and peek at her from around the corners. This lasted about a week and now they are comfortable together and smell each others noses. I even caught Bella licking one of Pünchki's ears! JuJu who does NOT like any cats, does not seem to mind Pünchki either! She'll make a little tiny noise if Pünchki gets too close, but none of the hissing, spitting and swatting she does with Simba and Bella! I think Pünchki gives off a very calm, relaxed atmosphere and the other kitties really pick up on that.
Pünchki is what is called a Dilute Calico & has beautiful colors of gray, orange and crème. She is SO loving. She loves to be held and to nuzzle and cuddle you! She is absolutely precious! She fits in with our family like a glove, like she was always meant to be with us!
